the modernised look is so the restaurant buildings can be sold and reused easily: if an old mcds building similar to the one in the picture is closed, it would still be recognisable as what it used to be. It would cost more money for renovations after purchasing the building to make it look like anything other than fast food. Because of this, fast food buildings and others that used to look more silly have a more “modern” style. with thousands of restaurants closing down worldwide every year, there needs to be someone actually willing to buy the buildings. The lower the cost to turn it into what they want, the more attractive it looks to the buyer. E.g. from mcdonalds to a car shop or a sawmill.
