Some kids from Ukraine joined my school today, and I’m told that they know little to no english. Any ideas?

Hi!

First of all - thank you for kindness and supporting them.

What’s the goal?
To spoke to them? Chattering about weather and other “small talks”? Or communicate during lessons and other serious things like this?

Are you a teacher or schoolmate?
And what country, if not secret?

  1. Google translate, of course.
  2. Motivation. When I was a kid, my best achievements in learnin’ English was because of playing PC games (most of them weren’t localized/russified those times) and listenin’ to music in English with eager to know, what’s this all about) It would be good if they will understand that English language is need for them and could give some bonuses and opportunities in life, now and in future.

Also, I would suggest to treat them the same as any other new classmate who just moved from another district of your city or region of your country. They would mainly behave the same way as usual children: talk, smile, make friends, play, sing… But also lie, swear, melee, steal, hate. Don’t idealize them.
Their opinion about war and perception of this war would depend on many factors. Maybe this exact child survived Bucha or Mariupol, cities that suffered from russian occupation very hard. But it also could be a person from Uzgorod or Ternopil, that are miles and miles away from the war.

I’m not in class with them, but my math teacher was asking for ideas to be able to communicate lesson ideas and the like. Thanks for replying! (btw I’m a student, and in america)

Thanks again!

As for idea - well, I just realized plain and obvious one. Game, math, communication with others in English - it’s all about CoCo)) There are some obstacles, of course…

P.S.

Funny and sad fact: depending on the region of Ukraine theese children come from they may know little to no Ukrainian.

And/But again, the main thing is motivation. A lazy student is lazy student, no matter where - in motherland or being refugee.
“Good student would find and learn something from the worst teacher, and lazy one would learn nothing from the best master” - well-known proverb in some publics)

Hi everyone!
Due to luck/fate I’m alive and fine, as well as my family and (most of) my friends. My country also still exists and makes us proud of it. Of course we pay the most terrible price (with lives of our citizens and soldiers/defenders of our land) for it and have some troubles (like electricity blackouts/shutdowns and as result - business, Internet, transport on pause), but still struggle for our independence, lives and future.
Thanks everybody for support.

I’m so sorry about your friends and country, but I’m very thankful you and your family are well. I haven’t heard any updates on the war recently, but I do pray that you and many others will safely ride out the war.

One of my friend became a regular army trooper, and died in the summer because of russian shelling. KIA - sad but true.
My neighbors, couple of common people, civilians, died on spring. The same reason - russian shelling. Thanks heaven, their 17 y.o. daughter stayed alive.
My student, about 8 y.o. and his mother were fired by russian soldiersin their driving car in the first weeks of war while trying to escape from Kyiv.
