I have seen that there is an option under some profile to vote for a topic. I do not understand how that works. Can someone please explain it to me?

No, i mean vote for a topic.
Just used your profile for an example.

There’s a voting plugin on the Discourse that allows you to "vote’ on a topic. For example, someone might request a feature change and members can either downvote or upvote it. It’s not used on our forum though.
