A very important paper, asking a equally important question. Is cereal soup, or something else?
We shall begin by defining what cereal and soup are. The generally accepted definition of a cereal is a grain which is in the grass family, however that is not what we’re discussing. Use of the term “cereal” in this document refers to a form of food, typically eaten for breakfast, consisting of solid grain-based material in liquid milk. In place of the usual definition of “cereal” (the grain), the word “grain” or “grains” will be used.
With the definitions out of the way, let’s continue. A debate as old as time exists as to whether cereal is a soup or not. This topic divides people into two categories, who will be referred to as “soup-supporters” (those who believe cereal to be a soup) and “cereal-supporters” (those who believe cereal to be its own category of food).
Cereal-supporters closely follow the dictionary definition of a soup, pointing out that almost any popular and credible source[1] - including the likes of Wikipedia and Britannica - defines “soup” similarly to the following. “A liquid food, usually served hot, formed by combining meat, legumes, and/or vegetables, with seasonings, then placed in a liquid medium such as water, milk, or stock.” These definitions do not include the grains used in most cereals.
In contrast, soup-supporters see the definition more as guidelines than set rules, with the listed ingredients being mere examples. They lay out their own definition that a soup is a liquid containing small solid elements: a description into which cereal certainly fits.
The core of this debate almost always results in one simple question: which interpretation is correct? Before continuing, I’d like to note that opinions are subjective, and what one person believes is correct, another may not. This paper sets out to solve the issue in an unbiased manner, taking into account opinions and views from both sides of the argument.
