How are they handling it with current pandemic? The Finnish Government decided on 30 March that restrictions on contact teaching at different levels of education would be continued until 13 May. Teaching continued mainly in the form of distance learning. Later, the Government updated the restrictions so that contact teaching could restart at all levels of education on 14 May. However, it recommended that distance learning should continue until the end of the school year for all other than basic education. Nordic countries are closely following each other’s actions in meeting the challenge of Covid-19.The Finnish National Agency for Education has supported teachers and learners in their distance teaching and learning. In all circumstances, teacher’s main work is to guide students; for this, the teacher can use different digital tools and practices. How do they teach so much in such a small amount of time? Finland has vastly improved in reading, math and science literacy over the past decade in large part because its teachers are trusted to do whatever it takes to turn young lives around. This 13-year-old, Besart Kabashi, received something akin to royal tutoring. When I arrived in Finland I did not find big flashy innovative thought provoking math lessons. I did not find students who were better at mathematics or knew more math content. In fact the Jr. High and High school math classrooms have been rather typical of what I have experienced in Indiana. And most of the struggles (like students not remembering their basic math facts) were the same. The instruction and classroom structure of a math classroom in Finland follows the basic formula that has been performed by math teachers for centuries: The teachers go over homework, they present a lesson (some of the kids listen and some don’t), and then they assign homework. While some lectures have been wonderful and I have gotten to observe some fantastic teachers, I would say that on the whole I have seen more engaging and interactive secondary math instruction from teachers in the United States. It is rare to see a math lesson that is measurably better than those found in my district and I have seen several that were actually far worse. How are they achieving these things in just 4 hours of school per day? Time and time again, American students continually rank near the middle or bottom among industrialized nations when it comes to performance in math and science. The Program for International Student Assessment (PISA) which in conjunction with the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) routinely releases data which shows that Americans are seriously lagging behind in a number of educational performance assessments.
This information has impacted me because it is a completely different way to learn and a different learning style. One of the ways that it is influenced me is too try harder on all of my school assignments because less is more but more is less. Another way i have been impacted by this is when we go to school for like eight hours a day they are going to school for like 4 to 5 hours. Another thing that has impacted me is how they are teaching in the middle of this COVID-19 pandemic and epidemic. The final thing that has impacted me is how they teach their students in general.
