Do you have all of the good heroes? And do you have the best equpiment for all of the hero classes? If not, that is what you should do with them. (If you do, then keep gems for Ilia and other things that will appear in the future)

What you can do with your 8417 gems: Give them to me! XD But seriously, I would recommend you get a variety of swords/rings because those can be VERY useful and it makes it easier to try different strategies.
